Custom Lift Chairs for Complex Seating Needs: When a Standard Lift Chair Isn’t Enough


Buying a standard lift chair can be relatively straightforward when a person’s needs are straightforward. But what happens when they are not?

A person may have significant leg swelling, unusual weight distribution, limited mobility, postural asymmetry, an amputation, bariatric requirements or body dimensions that simply do not correspond with standard Small, Medium or Large seating.

In these situations, choosing a chair based only on its overall weight rating or catalogue dimensions may not address the real problem.

At Oz Interior Health, our approach is different.

We are not medical practitioners and we do not diagnose conditions or prescribe clinical treatment. What we do have is extensive experience in seating, upholstery, foam technology, mechanisms, structural design and custom manufacturing, together with industry relationships and experience working with occupational therapists and healthcare professionals.

Custom Lift Chairs for Complex Seating Needs: Start With the Problem, Not the Catalogue

A standard chair asks:

“Which model and size would you like?”

For a complex seating requirement, we believe the better questions are:

Who will be using the chair? How will they use it? What difficulty are they experiencing? What does the chair need to accomplish that a conventional chair cannot?

This can lead to very different considerations:

  • User height and weight

  • Hip and body dimensions

  • Seat width, depth and seat-to-floor height

  • Weight distribution

  • Mobility and transfer method

  • Leg elevation requirements

  • Back and postural support

  • Carer access

  • Mechanism capacity

  • Cushion construction and foam characteristics

  • Intended duration and manner of use

Where an occupational therapist or healthcare professional is involved, their assessment can provide important clinical guidance. We can then concentrate on what we do best: working out how those requirements can practically be incorporated into the chair.


When Leg Support Becomes an Engineering Requirement

Consider a person experiencing substantial swelling or oedema in the lower limbs.

Their requirement may involve more than simply having an electric recliner that raises the legs.

The additional size and weight of the legs, the required elevation position and the way that load is transferred through the footrest can create a very different mechanical requirement from that of an ordinary user.

This is where mechanism selection becomes important.

Rather than assuming a conventional mechanism will be suitable, Oz Interior Health can investigate alternative mechanisms and configurations. Depending on the application, this can include mechanisms capable of supporting up to approximately 160 kg at the footrest, where the mechanism and complete chair configuration are designed for that capacity.

But simply installing a stronger footrest isn't necessarily the answer.

We need to consider the mechanism, frame, user weight, weight distribution, chair dimensions, intended positioning and how the complete system will operate together.

That is the difference between selecting a component and developing a seating solution.


Foam Is More Than “Soft, Medium or Firm”

Cushioning is another area where manufacturing knowledge can make an important difference.

People commonly think of foam simply in terms of softness.

In reality, different foam types, densities, thicknesses, response characteristics and combinations can produce substantially different seating characteristics.

A user may require greater stability. Another may need a different response characteristic. Someone with an unusual body shape may require a cushioning configuration that accommodates them differently from a conventional seat.

Depending on the requirement, we can explore combinations incorporating high-density foam, slower-response or memory-type materials, layered foam constructions and other suitable cushioning materials.

Sometimes the practical solution isn't one special piece of foam.

It can be a carefully considered combination of materials, each performing a different function.

Where pressure management or another clinical requirement is involved, the clinical recommendation should come from the appropriate healthcare professional. Our role is then to use our knowledge of materials and manufacturing to determine how that recommendation can practically be incorporated into the seating system.


When the Human Body Doesn't Match Standard Chair Dimensions

Human beings, however, aren't manufactured to standard dimensions.

Two people weighing exactly the same amount can require completely different chairs.

One person may carry considerably more body mass through the hips and require additional seat width. Another may require greater seat depth. A shorter user may need a different seat-to-floor height, while another person's transfer method may make arm height or positioning particularly important.

Oz Interior Health can consider customisation of areas including:

seat width • seat depth • seat height • back configuration • arm positioning • cushioning • mechanisms • structural requirements

The objective isn't simply to make a chair bigger.

It is to understand which dimensions actually need to change and why.


Scoliosis, Postural Asymmetry and Specialised Back Support

A standard symmetrical backrest may not adequately accommodate every person's body shape or postural requirements.

For somebody with scoliosis, postural asymmetry or another complex seating requirement, simply adding more cushioning may not solve the problem.

The person's occupational therapist or healthcare professional may identify particular positioning or support requirements.

Oz Interior Health can then explore how those requirements might be translated into the physical chair through changes to back configuration, cushioning, foam construction, dimensions, arm positioning or other manufacturable elements.

Again, the distinction is important:

The healthcare professional determines the clinical requirement. We help determine how that requirement can practically be built.


Bariatric Seating Is About More Than a Weight Rating

A chair carrying a 300 kg, 350 kg or 450 kg rating still needs to suit the individual sitting in it.

Weight capacity alone tells us very little about:

  • body proportions

  • hip width

  • seat depth

  • leg loading

  • transfer requirements

  • positioning

  • required cushioning

  • carer involvement.

This is why Oz Interior Health approaches bariatric seating as a complete seating and structural problem, rather than simply putting a higher weight rating on a larger chair.

The structure, mechanism, dimensions and functional requirements need to work together.


Working With Occupational Therapists and Healthcare Professionals

Some of our most useful conversations begin when someone tells us:

“We have a problem and we're not sure whether what we need exists.”

That is a conversation we welcome.

An occupational therapist or healthcare professional brings knowledge of the person's clinical and functional requirements.

The user and their family or carers bring invaluable knowledge of what actually happens in everyday life.

And Oz Interior Health brings practical experience in seating construction, mechanisms, foam, upholstery, structural design and manufacturing.

When those perspectives are brought together, it may be possible to develop a solution that would never have been found simply by looking through a catalogue.


Consultation Before Assumption

Not every problem requires an elaborate custom chair.

Sometimes a different mechanism, dimension, cushioning configuration or existing product option may provide a practical solution.

And sometimes a proposed idea may simply not be safe or practical to manufacture.

We believe there is value in saying both.

Our objective is not to sell complexity. It is to determine what is practical, achievable and appropriate within our manufacturing capability, while respecting the clinical advice of the professionals involved.
